What to know before your Massage

Many clients are nervous when arriving for their first massage appointment. Here are some suggestions as to what you may expect during your first treatment. The licensed massage therapist will take a detailed health history before providing massage services. This is important to help the therapist better understand your needs and to provide the safest possible massage services for your condition(s). All information given to the massage therapist is confidential, and may only be released to your doctor with your written permission. After a brief interview with you, the therapist will guide you to the treatment area.

What to expect from a massage therapy session
Netranie takes a holistic approach to massage, inquiring about your health, occupation, medications, nutrition, exercise habits and other factors that can be creating muscle or joint pain. She will take the time to listen to you and understand your expectations and concerns. During the massage, clients are draped according to established industry guidelines. Most massages can be performed through loose-fitting clothes for those with reservations about removing their clothing.

Hot Stone Massage
This form of bodywork involves the use of smooth, heated lava stones applied to the body using long, flowing massage strokes. The stones become an extension of the therapist’s hands. The deep heat softens and relaxes tissues. The natural healing properties of the lava stones aid in toxin removal and increased circulation.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage
A hands-on technique designed to activate and cleanse the human fluid system by moving lymph and alleviating lymphedema. This technique requires very specific training and certification. Manual Lymphatic Drainage has been successfully used in a variety of contexts, including clearing areas of congestion such as swollen ankles and legs; reducing water retention; promoting scar tissue healing and regeneration; detoxifying the body (for this reason it is an excellent complement to cellulite treatments); clearing up skin problems (acne, rosacea, eczema, wrinkles, puffiness under eyes); providing relief from chronic pain, including chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, neuralgia, arthritis, migraine headaches, etc.; promoting deep relaxation to aid insomnia, stress, loss of vitality and loss of memory. Because of the nature of the treatment (light rhythmical motions that encourage detoxification via the lymph system), MLD patients feel a total sense of deep relaxation not normally like with massage. Manual Lymphatic Drainage is also a necessary complement for plastic surgery procedures, including liposuction, breast augmentation, breast reduction, mastectomy, breast reconstruction, rhytidectomy (facelift), forehead and eyebrow lifts, blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), rhinoplasty (nose job), abdominoplasty (tummy tuck).

LaStone Therapy
The physiological benefits of alternating hot and cold to the body have long been scientifically and medically proven. The stones are the hot temperature and cold means the massage temperature. LaStone bodywork involves the use of heated and cooled stones applied to the body in various ways to bring about relief to stiff and sore muscles resulting in alleviation of chronic and acute problems that many of us deal with on a daily basis.

Sports Massage
The educated application of massage techniques, hydrotherapy protocol, the range of motion/flexibility procedures and strength/endurance training principles for athletes. It includes pre/post-event and intra-event massage on site at sports events.

Prenatal/ Perinatal Massage

Massage therapy during pregnancy is a wonderful complement to prenatal care. The massage relieves many of the normal discomforts experienced during pregnancy like stress, backaches, sciatica pain, neck pain, stiffness, increase circulation, headaches, edema and leg cramps. Depending on how many weeks you are in your pregnancy, you are placed in different positions with the massage table and cushion in a sideline position to utilize specific massage techniques which soothe backaches and improves circulation to minimize the discomfort from the changes during pregnancy. This promotes more of a comfortable rest for both the mother and baby such as reflexology, Swedish massage or even deep tissue massage to address patient specific needs and requests. Regular massage during pregnancy not only helps diminish anxiety and discomfort but boosts relaxation and promotes overall wellness.

Thai Massage: also known as Thai yoga massage
Thai Massage was born in India and made its way to Thailand. It consists of assisted stretching, Meridian-pressure point therapy, and Pranayama. The therapist uses a combination of gentle pressure points and moves your body into yoga-like stretches with a breathing to replenish the body and strengthen the nervous system. It is understood that people say it's like doing yoga without any work. Like shiatsu, Thai massage is usually done on a mat on the floor. You'll be asked to bring comfortable clothing to wear a clean pair of socks. No oil is applied and you will be fully clothed. Most people find Thai massage promotes relaxation, improves circulation, restores energy, increases flexibility and centers the mind and body.

Swedish Deep Massage
The most common type of massage can be called the godmother of all Western forms of massage. This is a relaxing massage to reduce muscle tension, increase circulation and promote general wellness. It is based on five basic strokes: effleurage, a long, gliding stroke; petrissage, a kneading action; friction, circular movements and the deepest of the strokes; tapotement or “tapping,” which increases circulation in the areas being worked on; and vibration, a strong rhythmic shaking of the hands.

Deep Tissue Massage
A very slow, deep pressure massage with the focus to release chronic pain patterns, soften adhesions, release trigger points, break up lactic acid and soothe soreness.

Reiki
A mystical and powerful energy-balancing practice, involving the transmission of Reiki, or universal life energy. Reiki energy, which envelops and enlivens all life-forms, is available to everyone–except that most of us have lost touch with it. Reiki is used for almost everything. Proponents believe that Reiki promotes both physical and emotional healing, as well as stress reduction.

Trigger - Point Therapy
Trigger points are tender areas in muscles, tendons, and fasciae that radiate pain to other regions of the body. Therapists apply deep, sustained pressure with their fingers, knuckles, and elbows to irritated points in the musculoskeletal system, releasing both the point and the affected areas. Then, the muscles surrounding the trigger points are stretched to prevent recurring problems. Trigger-point therapy is used by medical doctors, chiropractors and physical therapists, as well as massage therapists. This technique is used for chronic neck and back pain, aiding in recovery from injuries and accidents.

Reflexology
Pressure point massage of the feet and/or hands to calm the nervous system, therapeutically stimulate organ referral zones and promote deep relaxation.

If you're interested in having a deep tissue, manual lymphatic drainage, prenatal, shiatsu or Thai massage, look for a licensed massage therapist that is fully trained in these modalities. Be sure that your therapist has your complete health history. If there is discomfort at any time, let your therapist know immediately.
